As fall gradually turns to winter, outdoor pests
like rodents and insects are going to be looking for a warm place to live, and your home may be a likely target. Mice, rats, ants and spiders may even pose a health threat. If you want to keep your home free of these invaders this winter, here are a few tips that may help you.
Screen Possible Entrance Holes
While cracks and crevasses can be caulked shut, not all possible entranceways for pests can be plugged. Gutter spouts and air vents must be left open in order for them to work properly. However, you can discourage animals and insects from getting into your home by covering them with screens so air and water can flow out but they cannot get in.
Clean up Yard Clutter
Yard clutter can attract pests and give them a space to hide until they can find access to your home. Rodents are particularly fond of piles of clutter and can make nests in a variety of materials:
- Wood
- Discarded garden pots
- Mulch piles
Recycle or clean up discarded items, and inspect your garden regularly for signs of infestation.
Inspect Windows and Doors
Insects and small rodents can enter your house through torn screens or gaps in a doorframe. Inspect these entranceways and ensure they are closed off. Caulk may be used to repair larger gaps.
