For most people, getting rid of pesky critters is as simple as contacting a local wildlife officer or exterminator. However, professional removal is not always effective, which is why many homeowners use the following techniques to set animal traps instead.

Make It Secure
To make sure your trap stays put, use an anchor to prevent it from rolling. This is especially important if you plan to leave it for any length of time. Before securing your trap, you can even insert a piece of plywood underneath to protect your lawn from claw marks.

Bring out the Bait
While it may seem easy to bait a trap, some animals are only attracted to certain types of food. For instance, skunks like cat food and sardines, while squirrels prefer seeds and peanut butter. Gophers, on the other hand, do not require bait as long as the trap disguised well.

Avoid Direct Contact
Finally, you must always wear gloves when dealing with a trapped animal. In fact, it is just as dangerous to make contact with a dirty cage as it is to be scratched or bitten. As a result, traps should be disinfected with bleach after each use to eliminate the transmission of diseases.
